Car stolen in Kenya? What to do in the first hour

Act fast, stay safe and let the people trained for recovery do their job. Here is what to do, in order.

1. Make sure you are safe

Your safety comes first. If the vehicle was taken by force, move to a safe place before you do anything else.

2. Report to the police

Report the theft at the nearest police station and get an Occurrence Book (OB) number. Your insurer will ask for it.

3. Call your tracking company

If your vehicle has a TMC tracker, call us immediately. Our team can see the vehicle's live position and journey history and work with the police on recovery.

4. Tell your insurer

Notify your insurer as soon as possible and share the OB number. Follow their claim instructions and keep copies of everything you send.

What not to do

  • Do not chase the vehicle or try to confront anyone yourself.
  • Do not try remote immobilisation on your own while the vehicle is moving. Let trained teams decide when it is safe.
  • Do not delay. The first hour makes the biggest difference.

How a tracker changes the outcome

Without a tracker, police start from a description. With one, they start from a live location. That is the difference tracking makes, and why insurers value it.

Common questions

Can I see my stolen car on my phone?
